COMPOSITE PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT ENGINEER

Summary: Design and enhance products for a leading manufacturer of high-performance door systems designed to meet the challenges within today’s highly demanding refrigerated, life science, industrial, commercial and security markets.

Reporting to the General Manager, the Composite Product Development Engineer is responsible for new product development and/or product enhancement work including design, prototyping, testing and manufacturing process development.  Additional duties include developing drawings and models and working with designers to guide the detailed design and drawing packet development.  Occasional field testing and support of new products is required as well as coordination with supply chain on new products and processes.

Must be able to work in a team based, fast-paced technical environment with a focus on innovation and creativity to meet evolving customer needs for special designs, enhancements, and modifications.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned:

Product Development

  • Assist in developing detailed project scope of work documents.
  • Project planning and management to assure projects are completed on time.
  • Develop concepts for new product designs or improvements as needed.  Hold design review meetings to determine best execution of prototyping and testing.
  • Select appropriate materials and develop material specifications.
  • Hands-on prototype building, assembly, and testing.  Other functions assist, but this position is the driver of prototype development and is expected to be hands-on.
  • Development and execution of test plans.
  • Manufacturing process development and training.  Includes workstation development, process flow planning, line balancing, capacity planning, and quality control planning.
  • Work with FEA models, internal and external testing of materials and assemblies.
  • Perform engineering calculations on material stress and performance metrics such as inertial loading, speed, and fatigue life.
  • Keep abreast of competitive products and technical developments as they relate to current ASI products and recommend product improvements when feasible.

Required skills/competencies:

  • Strong working knowledge of fiberglass reinforced composite materials and processes.
  • Fiberglass mold development experience required.
  • Mold repair experience required.
  • Familiarity with NDT test protocols
  • Hands-on lay-up, chop and spray, vacuum infusion, or RTML experience a plus.
  • Good internal communication skills and collaborative teamwork approach
  • Scientific mindset and methodology in developing test protocols.
  • Skilled in hands-on prototyping.  Comfortable with hand tools and basic composite, wood, and metal fabrication.
  • Creative thinking and problem solving
  • Strong technical writing abilities
  • Skilled in the use of computer aided design software AutoCAD & Solidworks
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office suite of software
  • Use of Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and other principles to decrease the cost and complexity of manufacturing
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret engineering documents.  Ability to create, read and modify electrical schematics and ladder diagrams for control logic for ASI products and to interface with non-ASI products.
  • Ability to create presentations and to make effective and persuasive arguments on various engineering topics to management. Ability to communicate via nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, etc.,).

Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Education and/or Experience: Bachelor’s Degree (B.S.) from four-year college or university preferred.  Four or more years of related experience and or/training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.  Experience in a low volume/high mix manufacturing environment desired.

Language Skills:  Ability to read and interpret documents such as engineering drawings, schedules, and routings. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to perform engineering calculations for stress, strain and life prediction.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, schedule or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Computer Skills:  To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Engineering design (CAD) software (AutoCAD & SolidWorks preferred); ERP systems; Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software.
