Operations Manager

Summary:

The Operations Manager is a highly visible and critical role, responsible for the oversight, execution, and performance of Manufacturing and Operations. This position leads all activity including capacity planning, staffing, safety, quality, compliance, and factory flow. This Leader drives the improvement of factory processes for cost savings, waste identification, and loss/downtime reduction.  The Operations Manager promotes the culture of teamwork and continuous improvement to be equally impactful to the customer and the financial performance of the organization. The Operations Manager has the experience, skillset, and leadership ability to be the driver of success.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following: Other duties may be assigned.

  • Champion a safe work culture by identifying and eliminating unsafe behaviors and work practices. Participates in Safety Committee and drives proactive safety audits and action items.
  • Assist in developing and implementing standard work procedures. Through the internal audit program, drive a standard work culture to replace tribal knowledge.
  • Assure quality procedures are in place and followed to achieve FPY goals.
  • Develop and implement a formal cross-training plan to assure flexible coverage.
  • Develop the Group Lead roles into area leaders responsible for their own value streams.
  • Manage overtime and staffing levels to meet lead time and productivity goals.
  • Oversee daily SQDC metric review, along with barrier identification and removal, with the team(s)
  • Engage team members in achieving metrics and removing barriers to develop a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Sustain improvements.
  • Engage resources outside the department to resolve issues as necessary.
  • Identify and execute process improvement opportunities.
  • Lead and participate in cross-functional project teams and/or Kaizen events.
  • Manage WIP and supply item inventory.
  • Assist in developing and executing the strategic plan.
  • Assist in developing and meeting financial budgets for Operations.
  • Ensure transactions for attendance, labor reporting and inventory are timely and accurate.

Supervisory Responsibilities:  Directly supervises employees assigned to the Business Unit. Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of the unit. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related work field preferred.  Experience with proven results is considered in lieu of formal education.
  • 10 years minimum experience in an Operations leadership position.
  • A track record of successful process improvements with the team.
  • Proven leadership ability.  Team development and/or leadership training a plus.
  • Strong working knowledge of continuous improvement tools
    • Value stream mapping for process waste identification and removal
    • Line balancing
    • Root cause problem identification
    • Work cell design & line balancing
    • Quality at the source
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excel, Word, and Outlook working knowledge.
  • ERP system experience.
  • Experience in low volume/high mix production environment.
  • Working knowledge of business accounting methods preferred.
  • High energy individual with the ability to multi-task.
  • Good prioritization and decision-making skills.
  • Logical and creative problem-solving skills.

Language Skills:  Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability:  Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Computer Skills:  To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Inventory software; Manufacturing software; Order processing systems; Project Management software; Excel, Word, and Outlook.
